Restylane®

Restylane is a cosmetic dermal filler containing hyaluronic acid, a non-animal sourced substance that represents the first type of HA-based filler to gain approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Restylane is used to fill out deep nasolabial folds, smooth away forehead wrinkles and eliminate fine lines around the mouth and eyes. As a lip enhancement, Restylane adds volume and contouring to lips that are thin or affected by “smoker’s” wrinkles that causes lips to pull in and disappear from the face. In addition, Restylane’s hyaluronic properties can revitalize the elasticity and suppleness of skin without adding volume, which makes it a popular choice for people who want to rejuvenate aging skin on the hands and neck areas.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

A sugar (medically referred to as a glycosaminoglycan) that is naturally produced by the body, hyaluronic acid is responsible for giving the skin fullness and volume. Found in all body tissues, HA contains molecules that readily adheres to water molecules, a chemical action that helps maintain the skin’s health and elasticity by retaining moisture in dry, aging skin. This “water-loving” nature attributed to hyaluronic acid is the mechanism behind its ability to fill out wrinkles, enhance sagging skin and “plump” out those deep, unattractive folds around the nose and mouth. Additionally, the HA contained in Restylane is not derived from animal sources so patients will not need to undergo a skin test for allergic reactions prior to receiving an injection of Restylane.

People suffering from arthritis are also given injections of HA for pain relief because its molecules attach to elastin and collagen molecules that facilitate repair and production of cartilage. HA further improves arthritic conditions by increasing the level of synovial fluid in the joints, a substance vital to the adequate lubrication and cushioning of inflamed joints.

Information about Treatment Sessions with Restylane

Injections of Restylane are performed in the doctor’s office and patients can resume normal activities following the procedure. A small needle is used to inject Restylane following application of a topical anesthetic at the site of the injection. Side effects include temporary swelling, bruising or numbness that generally subside within a few days of having a treatment. Results remain visible for one year or even longer in most patients.

For relief from swelling, a cold compress placed on the affected area for several minutes can reduce swelling as well as any discomfort caused by the injection. Patients receiving Restylane injections should avoid tanning beds or exposure to any type of intense heat. Taking NSAIDs such as ibuprofen may increase any bruising occurring around the injection site.

Restylane is a safe, hypoallergenic dermal filler that has been used to revitalize aging or damaged skin by replenishing the skin with adequate hydration and nutrients. Since its approval by the FDA, millions of people have experienced the amazing ability of Restylane to smooth wrinkling, fill out folds and hollows and enhance their natural skin tone by providing the healthy and long-lasting cosmetic benefits of hyaluronic acid.
